Praised by Jurors : San Diego AIA Honors Winners

Winning architects in the honors awards of the American Institute of Architects’ San Diego chapter won praise for more than good design.

Jurors said that winners provided solutions to sociological problems, such as lack of housing for the poor and the revitalization of fire-destroyed neighborhoods. In addition, jurors said winning entries made architecture more accessible by blending it with sculpture and art.

Jurors noted that San Diego architecture is going through a period of “gangly adolescence.”

Architect Rob Wellington Quigley’s “Monahan Residence,” which failed to place last year, was re-entered this year and won a merit award. He also won two honor awards.

More than 140 entries were judged by Craig Edward Hodgetts, Hodgetts & Fung Design Associates, Los Angeles; James Ingo Freed, I. M. Pei & Partners, New York City; Paul D. Curcio, principal urban designer, City of San Diego, and Daniel L. Dworsky, Dworsky Associates, Los Angeles.

Honor Awards

Miraflores (residential/single- family). A residence by Rob Wellington Quigley, described by jurors as a contemporary house with a “terrific” meandering road and interiors.

Unaccompanied Officer Personnel Housing (institutional/governmental), by Ralph Bradshaw/Richard Bundy and Associates, was called an unusually excellent solution for government or military housing, totally appropriate to the program and site.

Baltic Inn (residential/multifamily), by Rob Wellington Quigley, termed a unique housing concept executed with flair and dignity, yet on a minimal budget.

Miller Residence (residential/single-family) by Marc Tarasuck.

Lighthaus (residential/multifamily) by Batter Kay Associates. Condominium complex in La Jolla.

Design Synthesis (commercial/retail R&D;) by Galvin, Cristilli and Partners.
