Tennis Roundup : Wilander’s Comeback Puts Him in the Final

Two points from defeat, top-seeded Mats Wilander rallied to beat Argentina’s Martin Jaite, 0-6, 7-5, 6-0, Saturday night at Brookline, Mass., to set up an all-Swedish final in the U.S. Pro Tennis Championships.

His opponent today will be third-seeded Kent Carlsson, who upset defending champion Andres Gomez of Ecuador, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.

In a rematch of last year’s semifinal, Carlsson beat the second-seeded Gomez for the first time in five meetings.

Carlsson tries for his third singles title of the year today. Ranked 11th in the world, he won previously at Nice and Bologna.

The fourth-seeded Jaite was leading, 5-3, in the second set and was ahead, 30-15, in the ninth game before Wilander took control.

The world’s second-ranked player won four of the next five points to start a 10-game string that gave him the match. In those 10 games, Jaite took only 17 points.

It was Jaite’s sixth straight loss to Wilander and prevented him from appearing for a third straight time in the U.S. Pro final. He was runner-up to Wilander in 1985 and to Gomez in 1986.

At Newport, R.I., Dan Goldie upset third-seeded Wally Masur of Australia, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, in the semifinals of the Hall of Fame Championships.
