U.S. to Probe Problem in Fords

United Press International

The government reversed itself and opened an investigation into reports of sudden acceleration and surging in 3.2 million Ford cars--a problem linked to six deaths and 107 injuries, a consumer group said today.

The investigation was launched by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at the request of the Center for Auto Safety, a Ralph Nader group. Involved are 1983 through 1986 models of the Ford Crown Victoria, LTD, Mustang and Thunderbird; Mercury Grand Marquis, Marquis, Cougar, Capri and Colony Park, and Lincoln Town Car, Continental and Mark. They are V6 and V8 automatic transmission-equipped autos with 3.6- and 5-liter fuel-injected engines.
