Sculpture to Be Installed at Santa Monica Beach
The Santa Monica Arts Commission will celebrate the installation of “Singing Beach Chairs,” the first permanent sculpture at Santa Monica Beach, at 5 p.m. today.
The work by Douglas Hollis is composed of two 14-foot futuristic chairs with large stainless-steel tubes that produce melodic sounds when the wind blows. It is the first of 10 environmental sculptures that will be installed in a three-mile stretch along the beach as part of a Natural Elements Sculpture Park.
“The concept for NES Park--site-specific, permanent outdoor sculptures which utilize the natural elements--sun, wind and the earth--is unique,” said commission executive director Henry Korn.
“Singing Beach Chairs” is near the foot of Pico Boulevard between Lifeguard Stations 17 and 18. After the inauguration, performance artist Rachel Rosenthal will perform “For the Love of Gaia,” a tribute to the earth goddess.
The installation and performance are made possible by the city, California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
