BRIEFLY : Pasky Named Agoura Basketball Coach

Kevin Pasky has been selected to succeed Bob LaBelle, who resigned this year, as the Agoura High basketball coach. Pasky, who assisted LaBelle last season, previously coached the La Reina High girls team.

LaBelle, who expects to complete course work for a master’s degree this summer, resigned to pursue a career as an education administrator. LaBelle coached for 20 years at Agoura, the last eight as the varsity basketball coach. Agoura (7-15) placed third in the Frontier League with a 4-4 record and lost in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Agoura also selected Bart Morefield to succeed boys soccer Coach Marc Berke, who resigned after leading the Chargers to two straight Southern Section 1-A championships.

Kickers Finish Last in the WSA

In their first season of competition a year ago, the California Kickers were in first place and preparing to enter the Western Soccer Alliance playoffs, which it eventually won. This season, however, the team finished last in the six-team conference.

Cause for alarm? Not necessarily. California (4-6), which lost its last five matches, finished just two games behind first-place San Diego (6-4). Seattle, San Jose, Portland and the L.A. Heat all finished 5-5.

“We could teach the NFL a few things about parity,” said Donn Risolo, a league representative.

Kicker midfielder Richard Torres was named to the All-WSA second team.

Paskwietz Reaches 3-Point Shooting Final

Tom Marshall, the basketball coach at UC San Diego, can rest easy. His incoming point guard candidate hasn’t lost his touch.

Greg Paskwietz, a 3-A All-Southern Section selection who averaged 21 points and eight assists per game last season at Canyon High, has committed to UCSD, Canyon Coach Greg Hayes said.

Paskwietz advanced to the Southern California finals of the Spot Bilt Three-Point Contest by making 11 of 15 shots in the semifinals at Duarte High last week. Paskwietz will compete in the finals Wednesday at Carson High.

Paskwietz, 5-11, led Canyon to two consecutive Golden League titles and set school marks for points in a season (534) and assists (194).

Two Moorpark Softball Players Named All-State

Moorpark College players Krissy Erickson and Malia Ouzts have been selected to the all-state junior college softball team, the first time the school has placed two players on the team.

Erickson, a freshman shortstop whose brother Don was an all-state player last year for College of the Canyons, batted .309 with 10 runs batted in and 17 stolen bases. Ouzts, a freshman center fielder, batted .387 with a .575 on-base percentage and stole a school-record 52 bases.

Moorpark, which finished with a 27-13 record, won its third Western State Conference title in the past four years this season. Sophomore first baseman Karen Noble, who batted .237, has signed a letter of intent to play at Cal State Northridge next season.

Conejo Recreation Will Honor Top Athletes

The Conejo Recreation and Parks District will begin accepting monthly nominations for its Young Athlete of the Month program that begins in June.

All athletic organizations involved with young people are eligible to submit the name of any athlete 18 and under who resides within the geographical boundaries of the district.

Terry Schrumpf, who helped lead Granada Hills High to its second consecutive City 3-A volleyball championship, has been named City Player of the Year.

Granada Hills teammate Eric Dumas joined Schrumpf on the first team. Other Valley-area first-team players included Brian VanMeter of Sylmar and Coley Kyman of Reseda.

Hana Balfour of Northridge, Wendy Thomas of Thousand Oaks and Charisse Phillips of Lake View Terrace have qualified for the United States Assn. of Independent Gymnastics Clubs national championships, June 6-7 in Newark, Del.

Balfour, 13, qualified in the all-around, floor exercise and uneven bar events. Thomas, 15, will compete in the vault and balance beam. Phillips, 12, qualified in the all-around competition.

All three gymnasts compete for the Van Nuys-based Olympica USA club.

Occidental College outfielder Bruce Fuller, a junior from Newhall, was a third-team selection on the 1987 College Division GTE Academic All-America baseball team as voted by the 1,300-member College Sports Information Directors of America.

Fuller, a mathematics major, has a 3.81 grade-point average at Occidental.

Troy Thomas, who played cornerback and returned kicks on Crespi High’s Big Five Conference championship football team, has signed a letter of intent with UC Davis.
