Said Aouita of Morocco set his third world record, breaking Briton Steve Ovett’s long-standing mark of 8 minutes 13.51 seconds in the two-mile run.
Aouita, 26, was timed in 8:13.45 at Turin, Italy, during a meet between Italy and the Soviet Union. Aouita also holds world records for 1,500 and 5,000 meters.
