San Diego Section Softball : El Capitan Prevails in Semifinal
ESCONDIDO — Angie Bryant pitched a three-hitter and Linn Files turned some aggressive baserunning into the game’s only run as El Capitan defeated Grossmont, 1-0, in a San Diego Section 3-A softball semifinal game Thursday night at Kit Carson Park.
El Capitan (21-4) will meet Monte Vista in the 3-A championship at Helix High School Saturday afternoon. Monte Vista beat Sweetwater, 1-0, Thursday.
The only run of the game was scored in the second inning when Files hit a one-out double. Carmen Stanley then grounded to third and Files raced to third and beat the return throw from Grossmont first baseman Vicky Cavadias.
Files scored two pitches later when Suzy Schutz unleashed a wild pitch.
El Capitan had six hits in the contest but could not score again off Schutz who worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cavadias singled to start a Grossmont rally. However, Files made another big play, picking Cavadias off first base for the first out of the inning.
Bryant, who struck out four and walked one, retired the final two batters for the victory. Grossmont finished 19-6.
In the other 3-A semifinal:
Monte Vista 1, Sweetwater 0--Melissa Rodriguez pitched a one-hitter and Kristy Howard drove in the only run of the game with a sixth-inning double as Monte Vista (18-5) beat Sweetwater at Kit Carson Park. Rodriguez allowed a hit to the leadoff batter in the first inning, then no-hit Sweetwater the rest of the way. Monte Vista, the 3-A runner-up last season, beat El Capitan twice during the regular season.
In the 2-A semifinals:
Marian 4, USDHS 1--Laura Cisneros hit a two-run double in the first inning and Darby Seegrest pitched a four-hitter to lead Marian (15-10) past USDHS at Kit Carson Park. Cisneros drove in another run on a sacrifice fly to give Marian a 3-0 lead in the sixth.
Mar Vista 6, Mission Bay 2--Cyndi Davis pitched a complete game and Mar Vista scored all its runs in the second inning to defeat Mission Bay at Kit Carson Park. Mar Vista (19-4), which beat Marian twice during the regular season, will meet the Crusaders in the 2-A final Saturday at Helix High.
