Westlake High Names Basketball Coach
Greg Hess, who coached high school and college basketball in Canada the past nine years, Thursday was named boys basketball coach at Westlake High, Athletic Director Bob Fisher said.
Hess, 31, coached at James Fowler High in Calgary, Canada, the past four years, where he won one city championship and was runner-up another season.
“I’m excited about coaching there because the ability of the players is so much higher,” Hess said. “I’m not intimidated as much as I’m excited.”
Upon graduating from the University of Calgary, where he was a three-time all-conference selection, Hess coached at Earnest Manning High for four seasons and one season Mt. Royal College.
Hess was born in Arcadia and moved to Idaho before attending college in Canada.
The Westlake job became available in April when Roy Gilmore resigned after compiling a 68-36 record in four seasons. Westlake had its best record last season when it finished 21-8 and advanced to the Southern Section 4-A championship game.
