Sobstad Sailboats Hit Water Today
A hundred sailboats will compete in five divisions at the third annual Sobstad Race Week starting today at Long Beach.
Three dozen sailboats were turned away from the event after the entry deadline. The featured event is the no-handicap, Class A race, which is divided among the high-performance J-35s and Schock 35s.
For the first time, people employed in the sailing industry will not be allowed to steer boats unless they are principal owners.
Races are scheduled to start at 4 p.m. today and 11:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The races will take the boats close to Pier J south of the Spruce Goose on an upwind leg and along the beach, east of Belmont Pier on a spinnaker reach.
Defending champions include Bill Rosenberg’s J-35 Raging Rosy from Channel Islands Yacht Club in Class A; Paul Queyrel’s Swan 42 Toboggan, Newport Beach, in Class B; Peter Kent’s Peterson 34 Pop ‘n’ Us, Long Beach, in Class D, and Hubert Guy’s First Class 8 Frances, Cabrillo Beach, in Class E.
