Sports Briefs : Prep Baseball Winners
Mike McNary of Lakewood High School pitched a one-hitter as Lakewood defeated Westminster, 2-0, in a Southern Section 4-A second-round playoff game Tuesday. In other games involving Long Beach/Southeast area schools, Millikan lost to Arcadia, 8-7, in 4-A; Gahr lost to Righetti, 7-3, in 3-A; La Serna beat Saddleback, 5-3, in 2-A; Whittier Christian defeated Lasalle, 10-3, and Valley Christian beat Bell-Jeff, 4-3, in 2-A. In Small School games, Leffingwell Christian beat Coast Union, 7-1, and Pioneer Baptist lost, 9-1, to Chadwick.
Walkin’ Willie Update
William (Walkin’ Willie) Croker of Hawaiian Gardens, who is walking across the country for cancer research, was about 150 miles east of Oklahoma City Tuesday. Fund-raisers have been planned for June 7 at the VFW Hall, 12064 Centralia Road, Hawaiian Gardens, to raise money that is needed for Croker to complete his walk to Washington, D.C. There will be a breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon and bingo from 1 to 4 p.m.
