CalComp Tells of Move to Sell Computer Division

CalComp, the Anaheim maker of computer-aided-design products, said it has tentatively agreed to sell its computer manufacturing division to a West German company. Terms of the deal with ISICAD of Ellwangen, West Germany, were not disclosed.

CalComp President William P. Conlin said the company decided to sell the division, which generated less than 10% of CalComp’s revenues of $386 million last year, in order to concentrate entirely on computer graphics peripheral devices. Conlin said the computer division’s products competed with those made by buyers of the company’s lines of peripheral products.

“We decided that it was not smart to have 10% of our business competing with the companies we do 90% of our business with,” a spokeswoman said.

She said the division’s 90 employees would remain with the unit, which is expected to relocate operations within Orange County. The division makes and sells a computer-aided-design computer system and CAD software for architects, engineers and builders.

The sale is scheduled to be completed May 29. CalComp is a subsidiary of Lockheed Corp. ISICAD is a subsidiary of ISIMAT, a maker of machine tools.
