The World : Salvadoran Officer Slain
Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a Salvadoran army officer as he left a neighborhood restaurant in San Salvador where he had eaten breakfast with his family, the Salvadoran military said. Col. Jose Guillermo Fuentes Ayala, 48, a commander of one of the army’s primary artillery brigades, died on the operating table at a military hospital. There was no immediate claim of responsibility from the leftist guerrillas fighting the U.S.-backed government of President Jose Napoleon Duarte. The military and U.S. Embassy in recent months have warned that the guerrillas are trying to increase their urban presence.
