A year-round appeal of merchandise and the opening of additional stores contributed to San Bruno-based the Gap’s 58% rise in profit for the first quarter ended May 2, a spokesman said. Also, sales rose 32%. During the quarter we continued to expand our business, opening 12 Gap stores, including three in the United Kingdom, the spokesman added.
