49er Official Resigns
Matt Coffey, 28, has resigned as Cal State Long Beach assistant athletic director for business affairs. Coffey, who will move to Tampa, Fla., came to CSULB three years ago from the University of Houston.
Willie Keeps Walkin’
William (Walkin’ Willie) Croker, who is trying to walk across the country for cancer research, was just east of Albuquerque on Tuesday, but he and his crew are low on money for food and gas, according to a spokesman at the Cancer Awareness Foundation, 22101 Norwalk Blvd., Hawaiian Gardens. The foundation is trying to raise money so Croker can continue on to Washington.
Youth Boxing Exhibition
Local amateur boxers will put on an exhibition Sunday at Spane Park, 14400 Gundry Ave., Paramount. The first of 15 bouts will start at 1 p.m. Admission is free.
Tennis Expo
The third annual Long Beach Tennis Expo will be Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the El Dorado Tennis Center, 2800 Studebaker Rd., Long Beach. The latest in tennis equipment will be displayed, and there will be fast-serve and beat-the-pro contests.
Hockey Tournament
The third annual Norwalk Mite Invitational Hockey Tournament will be May 23-25 at the Norwalk Ice Arena, 14100 Shoemaker Rd. Teams--made up of boys 7 to 10 years old--will represent Norwalk, Ontario, Fresno and Marina Cities, as well as Denver and Alberta, Canada. The finals will be at noon on Memorial Day.
Biola Wins in Japan
The Biola University men’s basketball team defeated the Japan University team three times last week in Japan. In a game played at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium, Mike Wnek scored 19 points to lead the Eagles to a 110-86 victory.
