Playwright Edward Albee is directing the world premiere of his new work “Marriage Play” this weekend at Vienna’s English Theatre. Albee told a news conference Wednesday that the new work, which stars Kathleen Butler and Tom Klunis as a pair of warring spouses, reflects his disenchantment with the institution of marriage. “Marriage is both hopeless and should probably continue,” Albee said. Vienna’s English Theatre has earned a high reputation in the English-speaking world since Franz Schafranek founded it in 1963 as a vehicle for his American actress-wife Ruth Brinkmann. Tennessee Williams premiered “The Red Devil Battery Sign” there in 1976, while its most recent production was of two one-act works by English playwright Harold Pinter, with the author directing a cast of well-known British actors.
