The leader of Malta’s opposition Nationalist Party claimed a narrow victory over the socialist Labor Party, which has ruled the Mediterranean island for 16 years. No official results were released in the slow vote count from Saturday’s election, but Prime Minister Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici conceded that unofficial tallies showed the Nationalists winning more than 50% of the vote. The Nationalists, led by Edward Fenech Adami, had campaigned against Malta’s links with the Soviet Bloc and Libya and urged closer ties with the West.
