Community College Roundup : Orange Coast Women Win State Swim Title
Freshmen Tina Constable and Janet Popp led the Orange Coast College women’s swim team to its fourth straight title Saturday in the community college state championships at Merced.
Constable won the 50-yard freestyle and was second in the 50-yard butterfly and 100-yard butterfly. Popp won the 100-yard individual medley and was third in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke.
The Pirates finished with 412 points to runner-up West Valley’s 357. Diablo Valley (340) was third, Golden West (207) fourth and Sierra (143) fifth.
In the men’s competition, OCC finished third with 352 points. Santa Monica scored 390 to win the championship, Diablo Valley (358) was second, Palomar (241) fourth and Golden West (227 1/2) fifth.
In the Orange Empire Conference Track and Field Championships:
Rancho Santiago 192, Saddleback 160, Orange Coast 147--Don Hollis won the 100 meters in 10.74 seconds, was second in the 200 at 21.73 and ran on the second-place 400-meter and first-place 1,600-meter relay teams to lead the Dons. John Cronin of Saddleback won the 1,500 in 3:57.8 and won the 800 in 1:51.6.
Jamie Nelson from Rancho Santiago won the javelin with a throw of 198-2.
