Impoverished Nepal Tells of Reform Plans
KATMANDU, Nepal — The government has announced a series of goals designed to lift the Himalayan kingdom out of the ranks of the world’s poorest nations by the end of the century.
The program, based on broad instructions from King Birendra and announced last week, is aimed at meeting the population’s basic needs of food, clothing, shelter, health and education.
Nepal, with a population of 16 million, is ranked among the world’s most impoverished nations, with a per capita income estimated by the United Nations at $123 a year.
The government plan sets a goal of providing minimal housing of 320 square feet with basic amenities for every family in a nation where 7% of the population is now homeless.
The program also aims at providing every resident with a basic nutritional intake of 2,250 calories a day by the year 2000.
