HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS : Berline Bounces Back With 2-Hitter as Notre Dame Pins St. Genevieve, 2-0
Becca Berline rebounded Friday from her first defeat by pitching a two-hitter and striking out 10 as Notre Dame stayed within striking distance of first-place Alemany with a 2-0 San Fernando Valley League win over St. Genevieve.
Berline (5-1), a freshman right-hander, suffered her loss Wednesday in a league game against Alemany.
Kristi Mullen’s single in the fourth scored Trina Koenig and gave Notre Dame (13-5, 5-1 in league) a 1-0 lead. Mullen had another run-scoring single in the seventh to provide Notre Dame with an insurance run.
SOFTBALL
Tiffani Riley and Suzanne Schwary each had two hits and two runs batted in to lead Alemany past Chaminade, 7-0, in a San Fernando Valley League game. Janeen Duncan, who had two hits and scored two runs, struck out eight to earn the victory for Alemany (14-6, 6-0 in league).
Krissy Peck threw a one-hitter and struck out 16 as Bel-Air Prep (12-3, 7-1 in league) defeated Campbell Hall, 9-2, in a Delphic League game. Jenny Kaselmen’s double was the only hit for Campbell Hall (1-10, 1-6 in league).
VOLLEYBALL
Scott Sciarabba had 15 kills to lead Alemany to a 15-5, 1-15, 15-12, 10-15, 16-14 nonleague win at St. Genevieve. Brian Brinket had 10 kills and Brian Young added eight for Alemany (9-7).
Erik Dumas had 17 kills and Terry Schrumps had 10 as Granada Hills (13-2, 11-1 in league) defeated Sylmar, 15-8, 15-11, 9-15, 17-15 to finish in a first-place tie with Reseda in the Mid-Valley League. Granada Hills, the defending City Section 3-A champion, is the top-seeded team in the playoffs and will play host to Lincoln on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
