Local News in Brief : Music Professor to Be Acting Head of CalArts
Nicholas England, a member of the music faculty since California Institute of the Arts opened in 1970, has been named acting president of the Valencia institution, effective Aug. 1.
England will serve in that capacity for about a year until a search committee chooses a permanent president, the school announced.
Robert J. Fitzpatrick, CalArts president since 1975, resigned in March to head the new Euro-Disneyland in Paris. He will remain at CalArts through July. Fitzpatrick also served as director of the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival.
In announcing the appointment, Jon B. Lovelace, chairman of CalArts’ Board of Trustees, cited England’s “scholarly reputation and long, distinguished service to the institute.”
An enthnomusicologist who specializes in African music, England served as associate dean of the institute’s School of Music from 1970 to 1972 and as dean from 1972 to 1983. England envisioned and built CalArts’ Non-EuroAmerican Studies Program, Lovelace said.
England has made two films with director John Marshall that are considered landmarks in the field of music ethnology, he said.
