As many as 70 Soviet soldiers were killed last week when an avalanche buried a military base near a mountain highway in northern Afghanistan, Western diplomatic sources in Pakistan said. They said the avalanche wiped out the garrison at the base, which guards the Salang highway that runs north from Kabul to the Soviet border. Afghan guerrilla officials based in Pakistan said they could not confirm the report but that avalanches are frequent in the mountainous area.
