FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Chaminade Moves Into Semifinals
Led by the singles play of Faire Stanley, Abigail Villena and Sarah Eipe, Chaminade High defeated San Luis Obispo, 12-6, in a Southern Section 2-A quarterfinal tennis match at the Northridge Tennis Center on Tuesday.
Stanley, Villena and Eipe dominated their opponents, winning all nine sets by a combined score of 54-3. Anne Eipe, Sarah’s sister, teamed up with Sandy Hua to win two of three doubles sets.
This is the second straight year that Chaminade has advanced to the semifinals. In 1985, the Eagles were eliminated by Indio. Chaminade will play Valencia, a 11-7 winner over Whittier, in the semifinals on Thursday.
GIRLS TENNIS
Agoura 9, Woodbridge 9--Agoura (20-0) won the Southern Section 3-A quarterfinal match on the total games tiebreaker (73-56).
Cathi Teobaldi, Jennifer Whitney and Trisha Silverman each won two of three singles matches to give Agoura a 6-3 advantage. But Agoura won only three of nine doubles sets to force the tiebreaker.
Agoura, seeded No. 2 in the 3-A, will play Thousand Oaks in the semifinals on Thursday.
Thousand Oaks 10, Alhambra 6--Rachel Collins and Kirstin Smith each won two singles matches to lead Thousand Oaks, seeded No. 3, to the 3-A quarterfinal win at Alhambra. Thousand Oaks (19-3) also was led by the Kirsten Thorstenson and Diane Brock, who won two of three doubles matches.
Louisville 13, Burroughs (R) 5--With Robyn Brown and Lauralyn McCarthy sweeping their singles sets, and Nancy Robinson and Gina Partardino sweeping their doubles opponents, Louisville won the 2-A Southern Section quarterfinal match at Ridgecrest.
Louisville (16-6), seeded No. 3, will play second-ranked Indio, a 14-4 winner over Walnut, in the semifinals on Thursday.
La Reina 15, Cabrillo 3--Corinne Heinzman and Katie Glynn each swept their three singles matches to lead La Reina, seeded No. 2, to the victory in the 1-A quarterfinals. Liz Moody and Amy Saffire of La Reina paired up and swept their doubles matches.
La Reina faces Pasadena Poly in the semifinals on Thursday.
Grant 5, Van Nuys 2--No. 2 player Jennifer Schneider overcame a 5-2 deficit to beat Michele Flamer of Van Nuys, 8-7, to help Grant win the East Valley 4-A League contest.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Canyon def. La Habra, 15-3, 16-14, 15-13--Led by the hitting of Jennifer Pinkerton and Leicha Wojciechowski, Canyon won the Southern Section 3-A quarterfinal match. In the second game, Canyon trailed, 10-1, but rallied for the win. Canyon will play top-ranked Nordhoff in the semifinals on Thursday.
Nordhoff def. Burroughs (B), 15-6, 15-1, 15-6--Burroughs was eliminated by No. 1 Nordhoff in the Southern Section 3-A quarterfinal at Nordhoff.
Thousand Oaks def. Upland, 15-10, 15-7, 10-15, 15-10--Led by Kristin McIntyre, Julie Chellevold and Beth Welch, Thousand Oaks (15-4) upset third-ranked Upland in the 2-A quarterfinal match at Thousand Oaks, which plays the winner of the Norco-Western match in the semifinals on Thursday.
Campbell Hall def. St. Monica, 11-15, 10-15, 15-13, 15-9, 15-2--Campbell Hall trailed in the third game, 12-9, but rallied for the five-game win behind the hitting of Cherise Smith in the Southern Section 1-A quarterfinal. Nicole Holland had 18 assists for Campbell Hall.
Calabasas def. San Gabriel, 15-6, 13-15, 16-14, 15-13--Tracey Gonzales had 16 kills and Sandi Thomsen added 15 to lead Calabasas (13-4) to the victory in the 3-A quarterfinals.
