Los Angeles City Atty. James Hahn said he would file criminal charges against Southern California Rapid Transit District drivers found to be operating buses without proper licenses or with traffic warrants on their records. Beginning an investigation of reports that RTD drivers have suspended or expired licenses or other driving record problems--and that RTD officials have difficulty in monitoring drivers’ records--Hahn asked the RTD for names, birth dates and driver license numbers of all the district’s drivers so his office can check state Department of Motor Vehicle records. Earl Clark, general chairman of the bus drivers’ union, labeled Hahn’s investigation a “witch hunt” and said he will seek a court order to block RTD from releasing the information, but an RTD spokesman said the district will “assist the city attorney’s office in any way we can.”
