3 in Red Brigades Given Life Terms

ROME —  Three members of the ultraleftist Red Brigades terror group were sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder of a prison warden, Italian newspapers reported Sunday.

The Rome Court of Assize was said to have handed down the sentences Saturday against Francesco Donati, Carlo Garavaglia and Barbara Fabrizi in the Dec. 3, 1982, killing of Germana Stefanini, 57, head warden of the women’s section at Rome’s Rebibbia prison.

According to court testimony, the three terrorists held Stefanini hostage at her apartment to coerce her to help free imprisoned Red Brigades colleagues, the newspapers said. When she said she had no power to intervene, they killed her, the reports said.

The three Red Brigades members received an additional 30 years in prison each in a similar attack on a prison employee who survived after being shot in the mouth and in an abortive assault in August, 1982, on a military aeronautics institute near Rome.
