Sadek Mahdi, who is expected to head Sudan’s next government, said he hopes to maintain ties with Washington ---- and strengthen relations with Libya. Mahdi, a former prime minister, said the fact that Libya is a nearby country “necessitates good neighborly relations and the boosting of ties.” Several hundred U.S. diplomatic aides and dependents have been withdrawn from Sudan because gunmen wounded a U.S. Embassy employee last week. Mahdi’s Umma party won the most seats in the constituent assembly in elections this month.
