VIDEOCASSETTES : Excellent Good Fair Poor
“Monterey Pop.” Sony. $59.95. This celebrated D. A. Pennebaker documentary about the landmark 1967 rock festival lacks the crackling tension and authority of “Don’t Look Back,” Pennebaker’s earlier look at Bob Dylan on tour. But there is a vitality and cultural expanse to the music (Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, the Who, others) that remain engaging. The bonus is the excellent print, a far sharper edge than I remember from seeing the film in theaters. The reason: The program was transferred from the original wet-gated negative and there’s a remixed digital Dolby sound track. Classy job. 1/2
