LAUGHLIN IN L.A. FOR TREATMENT
Tom Laughlin, star of the Billy Jack movies, is undergoing treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for a severe head concussion, neck injuries and a possible skull fracture suffered during filming of a karate sequence, officials said Tuesday.
Laughlin, 46, sustained the injuries last week when he was hit several times on the head with bottles in a fight sequence on the Toronto set of “The Return of Billy Jack,” film publicist Robin Hunt said.
Laughlin, who is also the director and producer of the film, is expected to be released from the hospital in a few days. Production on the $8.4-million set is set to resume by the end of the week.
“He was hit with a breakaway bottle that was used for hitting walls and stone and not heads,” said Samantha Dean of Rogers and Cowen, the public relations firm that represents Billy Jack Productions. “Apparently, the special-effects person was out to lunch, and an assistant used the wrong bottles for the scene.”
Normally, the bottles used for fight scenes are made of a sugar compound and are usually paper thin.
The incident occurred Thursday, but it was not until Saturday when Laughlin, suffering from headaches, decided to fly to Los Angeles to see his doctor, Dean said.
