Bell Plays Belmont for City Soccer Title
Bell High School, led by all-time prep scoring leader Waldir Guerra, will play Belmont tonight at 7:30 at Garfield High for the Los Angeles City Section soccer championship.
Guerra, a native of El Salvador and also one of the top football placekickers in the City, has scored a national-record 120 goals in his three-year career. Guerra had all three goals in Bell’s 3-0 semifinal victory over San Pedro, even though he played with an injured thigh and sat out most of the second half. Bell has a record of 12-1-2.
Belmont (14-1-2) advanced to the final with a hard-fought victory over defending champion Kennedy. After playing to a scoreless tie through regulation and four overtimes, Belmont finally won on a sudden-death penalty kick. It was Belmont’s 13th shutout of the season.
Semifinal losers San Pedro and Kennedy will play the consolation game at 5 p.m.
