Violence Erupts in Hormel Strike
AUSTIN, Minn. — Striking meatpackers encircled the Geo. Hormel & Co. plant today, slashed tires and broke a car window to protest the hiring of replacement workers. One returning employee was slightly injured.
About 150 Hormel strikers in the 5-month-old walkout gathered at each of two gates, shouting and throwing snowballs. The strikers also encircled the plant with a motorcade of about 100 cars and stopped the vehicles. The violence erupted as Hormel officials began hiring replacements for strikers of Local P-9 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.
