Newsday to Supply Data for Flashing Electronic Bulletins in New York’s Times Square
NEW YORK — Electronic news bulletins will once again flash across the former New York Times building in Times Square, but the reports will be coming from the Long Island newspaper, Newsday.
The Newsday contract will reactivate the 360-foot-long, 5-foot-high electronic board that wraps around the 24-story building in the triangle at Times Square.
The “zipper,” which first flashed the news in 1928, when it displayed the presidential election returns, has been dark for eight years. Newsday has also agreed to sponsor the annual New Year’s Eve festivities at Times Square for the next five years, the building’s owners announced.
