The Northeast Louisiana University women’s basketball team, ranked No. 7 in the nation, was put on probation for one year by the NCAA for recruiting violations.
The action was announced by Frank J. Remington, chairman of the NCAA Committee on Infractions, who said six violations occurred in the recruitment of an outstanding high school basketball prospect who subsequently enrolled at the university and competed during the 1984-85 season.
The school identified the player as Chana Perry and said she has been declared ineligible for the rest of the season.
Northeast Louisiana was publicly reprimanded, censured and placed on probation for one year. The women’s basketball team will not be eligible to participate in the Division I championship tournament or any other postseason competition. The coach, Linda Harper, will be prohibited from participating in any off-campus recruiting activities.
