The Chicago Bears have offered All-Pro defensive end Richard Dent a contract extension that may end his threat to “boycott” the Super Bowl.

Dent’s agent, Everett Glenn, was quoted in Friday’s editions of the Chicago Tribune as saying that the Bears had increased their offer for the first time in several months.

General Manager Jerry Vainisi confirmed that he had increased the total package and had tied less of it to incentives.

The offer is worth approximately $1.1 million for three years, with 80% in base salary, the Tribune said. Dent played for $90,000 this season, the final year of his original contract.

Neither Glenn nor Dent, who was practicing with the Bears at the Atlanta Falcons’ training complex in Suwanee, Ga., would guarantee that Dent will play in the Super Bowl if the Bears win the National Football Conference title Sunday against the Rams at Soldier Field.

But Glenn said: “There’s no reason to believe he wouldn’t, based on the progress made today.”
