NHL Roundup : Flyers Pad Lead With a 4-0 Win Over Capitals

Rookie Darren Jensen stopped 24 shots and recorded his first NHL shutout as the Philadelphia Flyers padded their Patrick Division lead with a 4-0 victory over the Washington Capitals Thursday night at Philadelphia.

The Flyer lead is now six points over the Capitals.

Philadelphia opened the scoring on a power play when Pelle Eklund took a pass from Tim Kerr and fired a low wrist shot between Washington goaltender Al Jensen’s leg pads at 13:22 of the first period.

Mark Howe, Murray Craven and Dave Poulin also scored.

N.Y. Islanders 9, Pittsburgh 0--Bryan Trottier scored two goals, and the Islanders got five in the first period while trouncing the Penguins at Uniondale, N.Y.

Kelly Hrudey stopped 27 shots in earning his third career shutout. It was the Islanders’ first shutout since Hrudey beat the Penguins, 4-0, last Feb. 2.

St. Louis 7, Boston 2--Greg Paslawski and Mark Reeds scored two goals each at Boston as the Blues beat the Bruins for the first time in 12 games dating back to Dec. 10, 1981.

The Blues handed the Bruins only their second loss in 19 Boston Garden games this season.

Calgary 5, Vancouver 4--Jim Peplinski scored 13 seconds into overtime, and the Flames recorded their first victory in 13 games by beating the Canucks at Calgary.

The Flames had last won on Dec. 12.
