Renewed attempts to end Lebanon’s civil war got under way after artillery duels left nine people dead. As rival militia officials left for Damascus in a bid to revive a Syrian-backed agreement, Nabih Berri, leader of the principal Shia Muslim militia, Amal, accused Israel of trying to sabotage the peace process. “There is a real race between the advocates of solution and unity and advocates of partition and sedition,” Berri said.
