The new three-year contract with the car-hauling industry was approved after a three-week strike and the rejection of an earlier tentative agreement by the membership. Final vote tallies showed 8,792 favored the final pact and 6,808 opposed it, said union spokesman Tim O’Neill. The members earlier had repudiated the union’s leadership, rejecting by a nearly 5-1 margin a contract offer endorsed by the Teamster hierarchy. The rejection led to more negotiations, which broke down, and the union finally called a strike July 26, shutting down deliveries of new vehicles to auto dealerships across the country.
