Student Design Competition Entries Exhibited at Library

An exhibit of entries, including winners, in the annual Student Design Competition/Pereira Prize has opened in the Los Angeles Central Library under sponsorship of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The free exhibit will run until Saturday. Hours at the central library, 630 West 5th St., are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

The competition was entered by more than 80 students from Cal Poly Pomona, Southern California Institute of Architecture, UCLA and USC. They were given two weeks to design a building that would serve as the focal point for the downtown area while preserving the integrity of the surrounding buildings.

Top and bottom were crucial; they had to design a base with consideration for the interaction with pedestrian traffic and the top had to contain a helicopter pad yet be distinctive. The students’ concepts are exhibited in a series of colorful boards.

A design incorporating the symbolism of a lighthouse and a palm tree won first place for Sung Woo Kang of Cal Poly Pomona. Other winners included Bill Mochidome, UCLA; Paul Bonaccorsi and Steven Dangermond, Cal Poly Pomona; Robert York Crockett and Lalida Pinsuvana, USC, and Antonio Pares, Institute of Architecture.
