Western Athletic Conference Track : BYU Wins; Aztecs Finish Fourth Despite Milner’s Two Victories
Despite the best efforts of sprinter Hurbie Milner, San Diego State finished fourth Saturday at the Western Athletic Conference men’s track and field championships.
Milner ran the 100 meters in 10.45 seconds and the 200 in 21.08 to win both events for the second year in a row. He also ran a leg on the Aztecs’ winning 400-relay unit.
SDSU finished the two-day meet at Albuquerque, N.M., with 94.5 points. Brigham Young won with 188.5 points, followed by 1984 titlist Texas El Paso (131) and host New Mexico (101).
Milner was joined by Aaron Thigpen, Austin Shanks and John Speed in the 400 relay, which the Aztecs won in 40.3 seconds.
Thigpen also finished third in the 200 (21.41) and fourth in the 100 (10.73). Shanks was second in the 400 intermediate hurdles (51.75) and fifth in the 110 high hurdles (14.78).
Also placing for SDSU in running events were Kyle Morton, fifth in the 1,500 (4:03.7), and Tony Burns, sixth in the 400 (47.89).
Dyson Hamner cleared 6-10 to finish third in the high jump. Al McCalmont was third with his best of 49-5 1/2 in the triple jump. Max Lynn (15-6) tied for fourth in the pole vault, Bob Smith (6-8) tied for the fifth in the high jump and Scott Hoth (50-3) was sixth in the shotput.
