PCAA Track : Fresno State, Las Vegas Take Leads After First Day
Fresno State was the leader in the men’s competition and Nevada Las Vegas the leader in the women’s competition Friday after the first day of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. track and field championship meet at UC Irvine.
Fresno State, led by Dave Crume’s strong performance in the decathlon, earned 59 points, San Jose State 46, Utah State 29, Cal State Long Beach 22, UC Santa Barbara 17 and New Mexico State 10. UC Irvine is not eligible for the men’s championship because it used an ineligible athlete last year.
After five events in the decathlon, Crume was first with 3,813 points. Other top performers for the Bulldogs included Doug Fraley, who won the pole vault with a vault of 17 feet 10 1/2 inches, Paul Bender, who won the discus with a throw of 182-3 and Peter Brett, who won the steeplechase in a time of 8:52.31.
In the women’s competition, Nevada Las Vegas earned 24 points, UC Irvine 15, UC Santa Barbara 5 and Hawaii 0.
The Rebels were led by Sheila Tarr, who won the javelin with a throw of 162-6, and Sheila Nicks, who won the triple jump with a leap of 38-11 1/2.
UC Irvine’s Laura Mills won the discus with a throw of 140-9 and after four events in the decathlon, the Anteaters’ Stephanie Mundt led with a total of 2,324 points.
