I applaud your call for congressional action on tax reform in your editorial (Dec. 30), “Time to Be Counted,” and share your optimism that Congress will act to make tax reform a reality.

The 12th man in the impending tax reform battle is, as always, the public. What’s at stake is reduced taxes for low- and middle-income wage earners and fairness for all taxpayers. With its early endorsement of tax simplification and reform, The Times has helped draw indifferent taxpayers into a national debate in which we all truly have a stake.

With perseverance and public prodding, Congress may yet defy the skeptics (and the special interests).
