Who goofed? Van Nuys is put in the West Valley League

The City Section is close to finalizing its new leagues for 2010, and one of the most laughable decisions is putting Van Nuys in the West Valley League. Apparently the Wolves weren’t happy about being put in a new East Valley League with new schools Sun Valley and East Valley. So they got what they wanted, sort of.
‘The principal appealed and wanted a higher level of competition and was asked if she minded going to the West Valley League,’ realignment committee chairman Bob Marks said. ‘She said, ‘That would be OK. ‘ ‘
Principal Judy Vanderbok is no longer ‘OK’ with the decision after probably hearing an earful from many of her coaches. By putting Van Nuys in the West Valley, it creates three seven-team leagues in the Valley.
The leagues will be in effect for four years, so 2014 might be the next time Van Nuys wins a league title. I can’t wait to see how the Wolves are going to compete against Taft and Birmingham in football, El Camino Real and Chatsworth in baseball. Thank goodness there’s a five-inning mercy rule in baseball. In football, there’s a running clock in the fourth quarter when the game is out of control.
The district principals still must approve the plan, then it goes to the City Section Interscholastic Athletic Committee for final approval in October. There are some who think the Van Nuys decision won’t hold up. I would suggest exchanging Van Nuys and Sylmar, which is in the Valley Mission League.
Here are the complete leagues:
