Jamel Kelly, a 25-year-old black man, was shot several times and died July 3 in the 2700 block of North Wilmington Avenue in Compton, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Kelly was attempting to rob a Compton barbershop with two other people when two armed barbers shot at him, said Lt. Brian Elias, a spokesman for the coroner’s office.
The two other men involved in the attempted robbery fled the scene, but one of them appeared to be injured because police found a trail of blood leading away from the shop, said Deputy Guillermina Saldana.
Coroner’s investigators said the shooting happened about 1 p.m., and Kelly was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:13 p.m.
