For the truly food-obsessed on your gift list, buy a subscription to the new food quarterly from Momofuku’s David Chang. Published by McSweeny’s in San Francisco, the first issue came out in the summer, 174 pages dedicated to ramen, the food of the moment. Issue two, the sweet spot, debuted in mid-November, so giftee’s subscriptions will start with issue three.

Here’s the way Chang describes the mag: “It is a mélange of travelogue, essays, art, photography, rants and recipes in a full-color, meticulously designed format. Our aim is to produce a publication that appeals to die-hard foodies as well as fans of good writing and art in general.”

He’s got great people writing for him — Ruth Reichl, Harold McGee, co-editor Peter Meehan, Wylie Dufresne, John T. Edge, Anthony Bourdain, etc. Enough said. It’s hip. It’s provocative and it’s $10 a copy on the newsstand, but a one-year subscription (four issues) is just $28.

Would your great aunt Matilda, the one who lamented the demise of pre-Ruth Reichl Gourmet, be the perfect recipient? Probably not. But anyone who revels in the new iconoclastic food scene should love it.

P.S., An iPad app is in the works.
