Steve Nash likely to get chance to pass Mark Jackson on assists list
Steve Nash suggested on Friday afternoon that the Lakers might shut him down after he played against the Dallas Mavericks that evening.
In 19 minutes, Nash scored four points and had seven assists, leaving him four assists from surpassing Mark Jackson for third place on the NBA’s list of career assist leaders.
John Stockton tops the list with 15,806 assists. Jason Kidd is second with 12,091.
With five assists, Nash (10,330) can pass Jackson (10,334).
Following the 107-95 loss to the Mavericks, Coach Mike D’Antoni suggested that Nash will get the opportunity to see additional minutes if his body is up to the challenge.
The 40-year-old point guard has played in only 14 games this season, missing significant time with back, hamstring and knee issues.
“We’re going to get him five more assists,†said Nick Young after the game Friday night.
Nash is under contract with the Lakers for an additional season at $9.7 million, but it’s unclear what the future holds as the Lakers (25-51) look to remake their roster after a difficult season.
While Nash isn’t expected to play Sunday afternoon when the Lakers visit the Clippers, the team still has five more games before the end of the regular season.
