Old Dominion’s Taylor Heinicke sets NCAA passing, offense records

New Hampshire came into its Colonial Athletic Assn. opener against Old Dominion with the top-rated defense in the conference.

So much for that.

Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke established NCAA Division I passing and total offense records in a 64-61 win over New Hampshire on Saturday in Norfolk, Va.

Heinicke completed 55 of 79 passes for 730 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown and finished with 791 yards in total offense, an NCAA record for all divisions.

The previous Division I records were held by David Klingler of Houston, who passed for 716 yards and had 732 yards of total offense against Arizona State in December 1990.

The NCAA all-divisions record for passing yardage in a game was established this season by Sam Durley of Division III Eureka (Ill.) College in a game against Knox.

Heinicke’s passes and completions against New Hampshire were school records, but the number of touchdowns wasn’t even his best this season. He threw for seven in a 70-14 win over Campbell on Sept. 15.
