Move over Ramen Burger, the ‘Mac Attack’ has a mac and cheese bun

Just when you thought the hybrid food craze was over, a restaurant in Chicago decides to make a burger with macaroni and cheese buns. We saw noodle buns with the ramen burger earlier this year, but we’re talking about macaroni and cheese here. And for a double-whoa factor, these buns are fried.

Rockit Burger Bar, a burger joint in Chicago, created what it calls the “Mac Attack†burger. It’s got a regular burger patty, topped with tomato, lettuce, scallions and sriracha ketchup (yeah, the only way this could get more awesome) all sandwiched between two buns made of fried macaroni and cheese.

And that picture the restaurant posted on Twitter? We know, drool-worthy. There is cheddar cheese oozing out of the fried buns.

The “Mac Attack†is available until Sunday. If there were ever a reason to visit Chicago for a few days, this would be one of them.

If we’ve put you in the mood for some mac-and-cheese gooey goodness, some local dishes might get you there. Go Burger in Hollywood makes the “Mac N’ Cheeseburger,†topped with fried mac and cheese, caramelized onions, bacon, cheddar cheese and house-made smoked ketchup, and the Cheesecake Factory has a macaroni and cheese burger topped with fried mac and cheese balls and cheddar cheese sauce. And if you spot the Grilled Cheese Truck, you can get the Cheesy Mac and Rib sandwich with mac and cheese and BBQ pork and caramelized onions.

You could also make your own. Here’s a recipe for really, the best mac and cheese ever, from the L.A. Times Test Kitchen. Use it to make fried buns for your own ultimate meaty, cheesy, fried sandwich. And if you do make one, we definitely want to see it. Be sure to share your photos with us on Instagram and Twitter.
