Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joe comes to San Diego Fair: Love it or leave it?
Krispy Kreme Sloppy Joes are on the menu at the San Diego County Fair, serving up an extra-extreme layer of gluttony.
Now, we all know fair food is bad for you. It’s supposed to be. It’s often deep-fried, wrapped in bacon or covered in enough powdered sugar to resemble an Aspen, Colo., mountaintop during snow season. But this may top them all. Your arteries may start to close just by saying the words out loud: Krispy-Kreme-Sloppy-Joe. This bad boy makes the new Dunkin’ Donuts bacon breakfast sandwich look like diet food.

The Frankenstein breakfast-meets-lunch, almost-too-scary-to-imagine creation is exactly what it sounds like. A hefty portion of saucy Sloppy Joe filling is covered in shredded cheddar cheese and sandwiched between two halves of a Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut.
Chicken Charlie’s, purveyor of deep-fried fair food, has introduced the sandwich at the San Diego County Fair, which started Saturday. If you spot the brand’s red and white flags at a fair, brace yourself for a menu of Krispy Kreme chicken sandwiches, bacon-wrapped pickles, deep-fried Twinkies, deep-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and deep-fried balls of battered red Kool-Aid.
Dying for a taste? Chicken Charlie’s is slated to be serving up its deep-fried fair at the Orange County Fair from July 12 to Aug. 11 and at the Los Angeles County Fair from Aug. 30 to Sept. 29.
The Chicken Charlie’s Facebook page erupted in comments after the brand announced the sandwich’s debut.
Michael Chedrick wrote, “I hope you will have it at the Fresno fair.†Anthony Thomas followed with “Looks delicious! I can’t wait to eat one... or three!!†And Tim Bender commented, “I think I gained 10 lbs and had 2 arteries clog just reading this, but as always I just gotta try it!!!!!â€
Other commenters weren’t as impressed.
Eli Smith wrote, “This is why other countries hate us. ‘Merica,†while Chase Wheatcroft commented, “I dont think your stomach will be thanking anyone after that.â€
If they ever try to stuff a slice of meat lover’s pizza between two halves of a doughnut, then deep fry it, maybe then they will have gone too far.
But until then, fry on, Chicken Charlie’s. Fry on.
