Christina Grimmie died of gunshots to the head and chest, autopsy report says
Christina Grimmie, the former contestant on “The Voice†who was killed during a post-concert meet-and-greet with fans in June, died from gunshot wounds to the head and chest, and her death has been ruled a homicide.
"After examination of the body, toxicology analysis, and review of the available medical records, it is my opinion that the death of Christina Grimmie, a 22-year-old white female witnessed to have been shot by another and subsequently transported to the hospital, is the result of a gunshot wounds of the head and chest,†a medical examiner said in an autopsy report obtained by E! News.
Grimmie was shot around 10:30 p.m. June 10, and pronounced dead after midnight.
"She was doing a meet-and-greet, just signing autographs and selling merchandise. This white male approached her and opened fire, striking her," Orlando Police Chief John Mina said at a news conference at the time, according to the Associated Press.
Grimmie’s brother Marcus tackled suspect Kevin James Loibl, 27, immediately after Christina was hit, and the gunman fatally shot himself. Mina said Marcus Grimmie’s “very heroic actions†may have prevented further loss of life, as the gunman had more ammunition and a hunting knife.
Authorities said Christina Grimmie did not know Loibl, and that he appeared to have traveled to the show from St. Petersburg, Fla., with the specific intention of attacking the singer.
Grimmie finished third on “The Voice†in 2014, with singer Adam Levine as her mentor on the NBC show.
“Behati [Prinsloo] and I are absolutely devastated and heartbroken by Christina Grimmie’s death. Our hearts go out to her family,†the Maroon 5 frontman tweeted June 11, passing on condolences from his wife as well as himself.
In a Facebook post a few days later, Marcus Grimmie expressed gratitude for the donations to a GoFundMe account that was started after the shooting, which he said would be used to “help our family move out of our current house and to take care of the funeral.â€
Levine reportedly offered to pay for Grimmie’s funeral as well. Christina Grimmie was buried in a private funeral June 16 in New Jersey, E! News reported, and a memorial service the next day was attended by hundreds of people, including family and friends.
"All the rumors are true that when the gunman came…her arms were open,†Marcus Grimmie said at the memorial, according to E! “That's how she treated everyone she knew, her arms were open for them. So thanks again for coming out, you guys, and I love you, Christina."
