AFI announces its top film and TV programs of 2012

The feature films “Argo,†“Zero Dark Thirty†and “Les Miserables†and the TV series “Breaking Bad†and “The Walking Dead†were among the recipients Monday of the American Film Institute’s AFI Awards 2012 for outstanding achievement in film and television.

According to the AFI, the honorees are “selected based on works which best advance the art of the moving image; enhance the rich cultural heritage of America’s art form; inspire audiences and artists alike; and/or make a mark on American society.â€

The AFI Movies of the Year are: “Argoâ€; “Beasts of the Southern Wildâ€; “The Dark Knight Risesâ€; “Django Unchainedâ€; “Les Miserablesâ€; “Life of Piâ€; “Lincolnâ€; “Moonrise Kingdomâ€; “Silver Linings Playbookâ€; and “Zero Dark Thirty.â€

The TV programs of the year are “American Horror Storyâ€; “Breaking Badâ€; “Game Changeâ€; “Game of Thronesâ€; “Girlsâ€; “Homelandâ€; “Louieâ€; “Mad Menâ€; “Modern Familyâ€; and “The Walking Dead.â€

The selections were made by film and television juries comprised of scholars, film and TV artists, critics and AFI trustees including Angela Bassett, Brad Bird, Octavia Spencer and Leonard Maltin.

The AFI will honor the creative ensembles of these films and TV programs at an invitation-only lunch Jan. 11 in Los Angeles.
