An ornamental iron grill frames the Father Junipero Serra statue at the Los Angeles Plaza in 1971. Admiring the statue are, from left, Tercin May, Atlanta and Mrs. Barron Ott and Mrs. Douglas Hester, both from Manhattan Beach. The boy is Wyatt Hester, age 6. Los Angeles Street is in the background.
Father Serra established the first nine Spanish missions in California. He was canonized on Sep. 23, 2015, by Pope Francis.
