Las Vegas: Academy students perform with Stratosphere headliner

A good mentor is hard to find, but the students at Las Vegas Academy of the Arts have one in Stratosphere headliner Frankie Moreno, who showcases the talents of young musicians once a month. Next up: Maejoy Dotdot.
Dotdot, who will be a sophomore at the academy this fall, will perform during Moreno’s 8 p.m. show Wednesday at Las Vegas Stratosphere Showroom. Dotdot, one of the students Moreno has coached during master classes he has taught at the high school, plays ukulele and sings.
Two members of the academy’s class of 2013 performed during Moreno’s June 19 show. Brittany McKay sang a soulful tune she wrote, and John Lloyd accompanied her on guitar. Moreno told the audience cheering the young performers after their number, “There’s the next wave of Las Vegas for you right there.”
The monthly student showcase is part of a growing collaboration between the Stratosphere and the performing arts academy. More interaction is planned for artists, stagehands and students for the upcoming school year.
Moreno, who sings classic covers and his own music, performs Wednesdays-Saturdays. Tickets cost $39.95 and are available online or by calling (702) 380-7777.
[For the Record, 8:15 a.m. PDT July 5: A previous version of this post said the performance is on Thursday. It is on Wednesday.]
